My students were equally moved as the now 93 year old described how he survived through a combination of self-care, self-sacrifice, and luck. His powerful message emphasized how putting others first helped him survive by giving him a purpose, and leading by example inspired those around him.
Despite being repeatedly lashed, and losing two fingers in a machinery-accident, he maintained hope. He was a natural born rebel and leader, incredibly intelligent, aware, thoughtful, caring, and unforgettable.
Sadly, Mr. Flaster passed away on May 8th, 2014. I feel incredibly privileged to have been touched by this mountain of a man. He will not be forgotten, and his story will be passed down by myself and my students for generations to come.
